Android 15 has officially launched, but it’s currently limited to developers. Google has released the source code for its next-generation operating system through the Android Open Source Project. While Pixel users can expect support to roll out in the coming weeks, owners of compatible devices from brands like Samsung, Motorola, OnePlus, and Nothing will have to wait a bit longer, with Google indicating that Android 15 will reach these devices within the “coming months.”

Unlike Apple’s iOS updates, which often come with major interface changes, Google’s Android updates typically refine how apps and devices interact. Android 15 is no exception, with new features like single-tap passkeys, theft detection, enhanced multitasking for larger screens, and the ability to limit app access.

Android 15 Updates:

Some of the standout features include an update to the TalkBack screen reader, which now integrates with Google’s Gemini AI assistant to provide audio descriptions for images. Additionally, Google’s Circle to Search feature is getting a Shazam-like capability, allowing users to identify songs by tapping a music button. Whether you’re watching a video or overhearing a tune in a grocery store, this feature will provide details like the song’s name, artist, and associated YouTube video.

Google is also expanding its earthquake alerts across the entire U.S., including six territories. Previously available only in California, Oregon, and Washington through the ShakeAlert system, these notifications will now be available nationwide. Using accelerometer data from Android devices, Google can analyze crowdsourced information to detect earthquakes with magnitudes of 4.5 or higher.
