Today we’re refreshing Google’s Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy — the rules of the road that help people use the generative AI tools found in our products and services appropriately.

This update does not introduce any new policies, nor change how we enforce them. But we’re simplifying the language, and categorizing prohibited behaviors in a way that makes more sense — including clear examples of conduct that is not acceptable.

For example, we’re explicitly stating that using our tools to create or distribute non-consensual intimate imagery or to compromise security by facilitating phishing or malware is not allowed under the policy.

Finally, we’ve added language that allows for exceptions for certain educational, artistic, journalistic or academic use cases that might otherwise violate our policies.

You can review the policy as previously written as well as the updated version, effective today.
