Google on Tuesday (August 26, 2025) introduced a new AI feature for Google Translate where users can have back-and-forth conversations in real-time via audio and on-screen transcriptions. The update will be rolled out in 70 languages including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish and Tamil.
In a blog post, the company said that the feature can help people learn new languages. “Whether you’re an early learner looking to begin practicing conversation or an advanced speaker looking to brush up on vocabulary for an upcoming trip, Translate can now create tailored listening and speaking practice sessions just for you,” it noted.
Users can open the Google Translate app on either Android or iOS, click on “Live translate,” choose the language they want and start talking.
There’s a “practice” option under which users can set skill levels and goals. Google Translate makes up customised scenarios for users to dive into. They can either listen to these conversations and tap on new words or practice speaking with hints thrown at them.
The app also tracks daily progress for users.
The beta version will be rolled out for Android and iOS this week for English speakers practicing Spanish and French, as well as for Spanish, French and Portuguese speakers practicing English.
