Google is now letting readers have more control over the source of their news and information. Users can set up The Hindu as their preferred news website in Google News to serve credible information. 

How to set up The Hindu as your preferred source?

When searching for information on Google, you will see the ‘Top Stories’ section with news reports and content drawn from different websites. In that section, tap the button on the top right to open a menu bar that will let you enter your preferred source. In it, enter ’The Hindu’, which will populate the website. Select The Hindu by ticking the box on the right. You can then reload the results to see more news from The Hindu.

What are ‘Preferred Sources’ for Google Top Stories?

Google’s ‘Preferred Sources’ lets users curate information from their preferred news outlets. This lets you see ‘Top Stories’ that are covered by credible new organisations when you search online.

‘Preferred Sources’ will personalise the search experience so that the topics searched for are sourced from trusted news organisations.

How and where does ‘Preferred Sources’ work?

Google users who are carrying out online searches for relevant topics can choose multiple news outlets in order to see increased content from these platforms, though content from other outlets will still be shown. Users can also edit and manage their Preferred Sources selections later on. 

News readers can choose as many sources as they want, to see a diverse selection of Top Stories from multiple outlets.

Why is Google rolling out ‘Preferred Sources’?

“With the launch of Preferred Sources in the U.S. and India, you can select your favorite sources and stay up to date on the latest content from the sites you follow and subscribe to — whether that’s your favorite sports blog or a local news outlet. Preferred Sources is rolling out today and will be broadly available in the coming days,” said Google Search Product Manager Duncan Osborn earlier this month, when introducing the new feature and its use cases.

The company noted that based on its tests, over half of users chose four or more sources.
