In a major announcement, Apple has given iPhone users a new choice: stick with iOS 17 and continue receiving security updates or upgrade to the newly released iOS 18. The option comes as Apple prepares to roll out iOS 18 to the public today, following its iPhone 16 series reveal at the Glowtime event. While iOS 18 offers a host of new features, some users may prefer to delay the upgrade to avoid initial bugs or app compatibility issues.

Security Patches For iOS 17 To Continue

According to a report by 9to5Mac, Apple will provide iPhone users the option to remain on iOS 17 but still receive critical security patches. The tech giant has already made the iOS 17.7 Release Candidate (RC) available to developers and beta testers, alongside the iOS 18 RC. Although iOS 17.7 doesn’t introduce new features, it includes essential security fixes and bug updates, making it a safe option for those hesitant to upgrade.

This dual-release strategy is not new. Last year, after the launch of iOS 17, Apple continued to offer security patches for iOS 16, albeit for a limited period. Similarly, iOS 17 users will continue receiving security updates until Apple phases out support in the coming months. However, iOS 18 will be compatible with all devices that currently run iOS 17, so support for the older version will eventually end.

“Apple’s strategy of offering both the latest version with all its features and an older version with security patches shows their commitment to user safety and flexibility,” according to tech analysts. This move is especially helpful for users who rely on certain apps that may not yet be fully compatible with iOS 18, allowing them to hold off on upgrading while still protecting their devices from vulnerabilities.

iOS 18 Brings New Features, But Some May Wait

For users who do choose to upgrade, iOS 18 promises several exciting new features. These include enhanced home screen customization, a redesigned Control Center, improved Siri functionality, and the introduction of Apple Intelligence, a feature designed to improve device performance. However, users who remain on iOS 17 will miss out on these updates until they choose to upgrade.

In addition to iOS 18, Apple is also set to launch updates across its entire software ecosystem. Next week, alongside iOS 18, users can expect to see the release of iPadOS 18, watchOS 11, tvOS 18, visionOS 2, and macOS Sequoia, creating a unified refresh for all Apple devices. For iPhone users eager to explore iOS 18 but wary of potential launch-day bugs, the choice to stay on iOS 17 with security patches is a useful middle ground. Apple has done this before, and for users who depend on their iPhone for work or important daily tasks, waiting for the initial bugs to be ironed out before upgrading could be crucial.

How to Update?

The latest iOS updates will be available in the Settings app under General > Software Update, giving users the flexibility to make their choice. Whether opting for the newest features or playing it safe with continued security updates, iPhone users will have control over how and when they upgrade their devices.

Apple’s iPhone 16 series, starting at Rs 79,900 in India, will also be available for pre-order from September 13. This new lineup and the accompanying software updates signal another significant step in Apple’s continuous push for innovation while keeping user security at the forefront.
